In the very heart of
Athens, underneath the
monument of Acropolis, in the hill of the
Observatory, situated in the road of Saint Marina, is located the imposing
temple of Saint
Marina.
The name of the street is derived from beautiful and imposing Church of Saint Marina. In the churchyard, which is situated in the Hill of Nymphs, exists a cavernous temple, which is dated from 12th century. Saint Marina, which replaced an old Byzantine Church, raised in 1922.

Historically, the old small church of Saint
Marina, rebuilded
around 1920, with the
construction of a big new
temple.The temple stands out for its impressive architecture.
It has a big centric dome in the middle
and four around. The sacred temple is surrounded by an impressive churchyard. Tradition considers Saint
Marina patron saint of feeble and long time suffered children.
In ancient Athens, mothers used to
lead their children to the
temple,
worn them new clothes and left them in the
temple yard, hoping
for the cure of
their children. The
sacred temple depicts beautiful and
impressive murals from
the beginning of 17th century. Impressive
paintings like Birth of
Christ, Ypapanti and Baptism of Jesus, Jordan River, the Crucifixion, theTransfiguration (Metamorphosis)
of Lord, God and Savior Jesus
Christ and
Pentecost. In the south-western department
is portrayed Mark the Evangelist. Saint Marina, in the Orthodox Church,
celebrates her feast day on July
17.
