The Greek island of Santorini



Santorini is one of the most famous islands of Cyclades in Greece. The island, known too as Thera,  attracts thousands of visitors from around the world every summer.

 The name Santorini

The name Thera is taken after Theras of Sparta, who settled on the island and founded a colony, called 'Mesa Vouno'. 

The name Santorini derives from the name of the church, which is dedicated to Saint Irene. A tradition claims that the name of the island derives from the name of an early Christian basilica in Perissa.

Santorini Caldera

The volcanic activity which occurred on the island within the last two million years has played a significant part in the morphology of the island. Be sure to enjoy a day trip to Santorini caldera by taking the boat from Gialos, Athinios, or Ammoudi.

How to travel to Santorini 

The island of Santorini is accessible by sea and air transportation. Ferries and high-speed catamaran are departing every day from Piraeus port to Athinios port. 

The ferry-boat trip takes 9-10 hours, while the high-speed trip ranges from 4-5 hours.

If you travel by airplane, daily flights are performed by the Greek Airlines and depart from Athens International Airport (Eleftherios Venizelos). The duration of the flight is approximately 45 minutes.
