The Greek Island of Evia


Evia is the second-largest island of Greece. The island sits in the northeast area of Greece. Evia features one of the best getaways from Athens since it has an abundance of amazing landscapes, historic sites, and beautiful beaches. 

The island's name

The island's name comes from Evia, the daughter of the river Asopus. An old tradition claims the name Evia comes from an ancient word that means "rich in cattle" and indicates the island's rich nature. 


Evia has been inhabited since prehistoric times. Chalkida, the capital, was one of the first towns in Evia and is referred to by Homer. 

How to reach Evia 

By car 

Drive across the High Bridge Evripos via Chalkida. 

By bus

Evia is accessible by bus from Athens.

By ship 

  • Agia Marina to Nea Styra and Panagia Almiropotamos
  • Oropos to Eretria
  • Rafina to Karystos and Marmari
  • Saint Constantinos to Aidipsos, Limni, Chalkida, Oreoi, Pefki, Platania (Pelion), Skiathos, Skopelos, Alonissos, and Skyros
By train

Evia is accessible by train from Piraeus and Athens to the destination of Chalkis.

Evia Archaeological Sites

The island offers a range of museums and archaeological sites, like the ancient theatre of Eretria, the ancient fortress at Villa Evia, and the archaeological museums in Skyros, Chalkida, and Karystos. 

An attraction not to miss is the Dragon House (drakospita) in South Evia. Check out also, Steni forest, Mount Dirfi, the caves of Evia, and the Sanctuary of Artemis Prosioas and Karababas Castle.

The famous attraction of the Red House (Kokkino Spiti) in Chalkida feature in the bucket list. Be sure to visit the  Folklore Museum in Agia Anna and Kymi, the Monastery of St. Irene Chrysovalantou, and Thermae Sylla spa wellness hotel.

Other attractions include the Church of St. John the Russian in New Procopius, the Drosini Tower, in Gouves, the old bridge of Chalkida, and Aidipsos spa town.
